It’s Been A While…

So it’s been a little bit since anything has been posted on the site. There actually is good reason for that. When I started the site I wanted to cater to tech in general. I had grandious plans of having people write about a variety of topics. The truth is, no one wants to participate on a blog that isn’t already well established.

So I’ve decided to take a new direction with the blog. Since my main tech focus is the mobile world (and even more so, Android), I’ve decided to dedicate the blog to that. I’ll try to be better about updating, and hopefully will gain some momentum.

I’m still looking for people to help out posting articles. If you’re interested please contact me directly at ryan@geeklook.net.

Featured Android App: TouchDown

logo

Like many Android users, I was interested in getting my corporate email, calendar and contacts from my companies exchange server to my smartphone. Since android 2.2 there has been a somewhat higher level of exchange support, but there are still features that are lacking.

The biggest I can think of is the fact that you’re not able to set up peak times and/or off-peak times. What I mean by this, is when I am at work between the hours of 9-5 I don’t want to be receiving emails to my phone, because I am sitting right in front of my computer. Why waste my device’s precious battery life? For this reason alone I would choose TouchDown over the stock Android app, but these aren’t the only features that are unique to TouchDown, check out all of the features here.

TouchDown is a paid app, but in my honest opinion, it’s worth every penny.

GamesStop Becoming A “Technology Company”

GamestopWithTextureAndTag

Many know them as a video game retailer, but with the recent acquisition of Impulse and Spawn Labs, GameStop is positioning itself to become a technology company. They stated at an investor conference today that they plan to release a cloud-based gaming service.

According to the Dallas Morning News, GameStop also plans to expand the gaming service to a variety of mobile devices, they are even talking about a potential GameStop tablet, quoted as saying “if we feel like we could do a better job of making a tablet, we’ll do that.” These are still the early stages of the changes that GameStop will surely make, but anything is possible.

How to build CM7 from source

Screenshot

Ever wonder if you could build CyanogenMod from source?  It’s pretty easy if you have the right tools.  Thanks to @sykopompos, now you can.  @sykopompos has written a great guide that you can find here… Don’t worry, I know it’s in the MT4G section, but is applicable to all supported devices.

So, if you’re the brave sort and have a couple hours to spend on getting everything right, and are a fan of CyanogenMod, why not give building your very own rom a shot.
